I am an Outdoor and Nature photographer based in Plymouth, Devon. I have a long-standing love of the natural world and have been lucky enough to have grown up in the South West of England, with easy access to the scenic seascapes of the coast and the atmospheric landscapes of Dartmoor. Coming from a family that enjoyed being outside has meant that these wonderfully contrasting environments have been part of my life from a very young age.
I wanted to move forward with a career that would enable me to continue my exploration of the great outdoors and have been able to combine my enjoyment of photography with my love of the natural world. I would hope that my photography can be used to motivate others to want to protect and enjoy this precious environment as much as I do. In the past, my family have been connected to a variety of charities, ingraining in me the strong ethos of giving something back. Moving forward, I would like to work with nature-based charities and other like-minded individuals.
I am an outdoor and nature photographer who specialises in capturing landscapes and scenic views, predominantly of Dartmoor.
At this time, I am enjoying experimenting and photographing nature projects. I am currently using a Canon EOS 5D Mark IV. I don’t like to overly plan my shoots as it cannot be completely predicted as to what I will see whilst out on shoots. This being said, I always have a brief outline of what I hope to capture and have contingency plans for changes in weather, etc. On the areas of what can be accounted for, such as necessary equipment, gear and the location of the shoot. I am always well-planned and organised. Mostly, I am working independently, but have been branching out and including friends to accompany me. Whilst not working as a team member when photographing, I am not worried about doing so, as my volunteering roles have given me plenty of teamwork experience.
My work will appeal to a range of viewers who just want to enjoy nature; commercially, I would aim my work towards wildlife magazines and nature-based charities.
My process always begins with a random collection of ideas gathered onto paper. I enjoy the process of discussing each one, slowly narrowing to a select few. I often go off on quite wide-ranging tangents before settling on a less common direction than my peers. I have been told before that I focus on narrow and niche topics. The majority of my projects have been focused on the Natural World, most recently focusing on Honey Bees and flowers while visually exploring the origins of honey. Christianity’s influence runs through most of my projects, with one breakaway project being focused on dance and movement; I found freezing motion in a still photograph, although challenging and very fulfilling. I am continuing to pursue this by regularly photographing two local football teams.
